BLISS, Dorothy (Dale) (1928) IN MEMORIAM
Dorothy Bliss Dale, 95, died at her home in Charleroi on Monday, March 13, 2006. A teacher and bookkeeper, Mrs. Dale was actively involved in the Presbyterian Church and the Athena Club, both of Charleroi, and the American Cancer Society. Born July 8, 1910, in Pittsburgh, Mrs. Dale was the daughter of Jean Galey Bliss and Curtis S. Bliss, owner of Grant-Bliss Hardware of Charleroi, a store which closed its doors in 1980 after almost a century to loyal Mon Valley customers. Mrs. Dale graduated from Charleroi High School in 1928, Wildcliffe Junior College, near Philadelphia, in 1930, and Carnegie Mellon University in 1934, where she majored in secretarial studies. From 1934 to 1937 she taught typing and commercial shorthand at Charleroi High School, while her younger sister, Caroline, attended the school as a student. In 1937, while visiting family in Los Angeles, Calif., she met Clarence Dale, of Kansas City, Mo. The couple married that year and celebrated their wedding at the famed Coconut Grove in the Ambassador Hotel. The famous crooner, Rudy Vallee, sang to her wedding party. Mr. Dale's position as Director of Labor Relations for the Safeway chain of supermarkets took the couple first to Manhattan Beach, Calif., and then to Los Angeles from 1937 to 1944. The couple moved to New York City in 1944, where they resided in the Tudor City Apartments. From their window they watched the United Nations building being constructed a block away. In 1958, Mr. Dale retired and the couple moved to Monessen. Mrs. Dale worked with her father at Grant-Bliss Hardware and helped to raise her niece and three nephews, the children of her sister, Caroline Bliss Carson and Ralph W. Carson, of Charleroi. Following the deaths of her husband in 1965 and her father in 1967, Mrs. Dale moved into her parent's Charleroi residence in 1974 to care for her mother, who passed away in 1986. She also cared for her sister who was with her until her death in 2000. Following her retirement in 1980, Mrs. Dale became involved in church and community activities. An avid reader, Mrs. Dale also enjoyed traveling. Her first major trip was at the age of 12 in 1923, when she traveled to Los Angeles to visit cousins. Later in life, she toured Europe and Canada with her nephews. She also visited in California, Arizona and Colorado, where, at the age of 90, she attended the high school graduation of her great-nephew, Grant Carson, in 2001. At the age of 92, she visited her nephew, Bruce Carson, in Massachusetts. Known affectionately as "Dodo" to many of her friends and family, Mrs. Dale participated in a series of senior citizen health studies, including one for osteoporosis conducted by the University of Pittsburgh. Her spirit is best represented by a lifelong love of butterflies, her personal insignia in jewelry and home decor, gifts of which were often bestowed upon her by family and friends. She is survived by her niece, Carolyn Rabourn, of Cornelius, N.C.; three nephews, Dale Carson, named for her, of Boulder, Colo., Bruce Carson, of Amherst, Mass., and Craig Carson, of Los Angeles, Calif.; one great-nephew, Grant Carson, of Boulder, Colo.; and three great-nieces, Amanda Carson Mettler, of Gaithersburg, Md., Audrey Carson, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Caroline Rabourn, of Cornelius, N.C. A Memorial Service will be held in her honor at the Charleroi Presbyterian Church, coroner of Fifth Street and Lincoln Avenue, on Saturday, April 1, at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Charleroi Presbyterian Church. The SCHROCK-HOGAN FUNERAL HOME INC., www.schrock-hogan.com, is in charge of the arrangements.

CRABB, Charles Eugene II Circa 1922 (In Memoriam)
My father, Charles Eugene Crabb II, was born on March 18, 1904 and lived in Charleroi until he enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh, as a pre-dental student. He was the quarterback on Pitt's football team. I have a gold football charm that he was awarded in 1923.
The picture that I found on the alumni site was dated 1925, but I think that might be inaccurate because he would have been 21 by then, and not in high school.
One of nine children, he had to leave Pitt to help support the family when his father died. My father eventually married Emily Elizabeth McPeake, of Canonsburg. They moved to a suburb of Pittsburgh, where he became an engineer with a subsidiary of Lloyds of London.
I was born in 1941 and we remained in Pittsburgh, until I went to Penn State and my parents retired to Florida. Both he and my mother had become accomplished golfers and were playing with the pros on the winter tour, by then.
He died in 1977 and my mother remarried and remained in Florida, until her death this past February, at age 92.
I have an uncle who is avidly pursuing genealogy and I would appreciate hearing from anyone who reads this and may have known my father, anyone in his family, or anything about them. (6/8/06)
