KRUTZ, James Charles(circa 1926) IN MEMORIAM
My father was an ardent supporter of Charleroi Schools and Cougar Football. Even though he dropped out of school in the 8th grade to support his family (a common occurrence in early 20th Century), Dad gladly donated his time and talents to CSD, throughout his life until his death, on July 20, 1990. He was responsible for building the present goal posts at the stadium, as well as having the old '5th Street Elementary School Bell' moved there. Additionally, he NEVER missed a football game. He owned the same seats, since the inception of the stadium. I even remember him yelling in the crowds, when I cheered for Charleroi, in the mid-50's. Dad was a wonderful man and a great friend to Charleroi schools and sports.

LEWIS, Myrtle(1896)(HISTORICAL MENTION)
Myrtle Lewis graduated from the '2nd Annual Commencement', of the Charleroi Public Schools, on June 4, 1890. She then went onto 'normal school' and later, became a school teacher, after graduating from South Western State Normal School, in 1898.
Two important notes:
1.) Normal school- this is how school(advanced grades) was referred to, throughout the United States, in the late 19th century. 2.) At the time, a teaching certificate took only two years to complete.
Ms. Lewis passed away, in the early 1970's, at the age of 96.

PALFREY, Frank(Moon)(1950) IN MEMORIAM
My father would have graduated with the 'Class of 1950', had he not been forced to drop out of school, due to a family illness. Recently, on December 16, 2002, my father Frank, passed away peacefully, after a courageous and dignified battle with cancer, at his home in Tarpon Springs, FL.
Submitted by, Deborah J. Palfrey('74)
PHOTOGRAPH: Christmas, 1957 Copyright 2007, Deborah J. Palfrey; All Rights Reserved.
Frank "Moon" Palfrey, 70, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., formerly of Charleroi, passed away early Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Palfrey peacefully left this world for the next, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his "three girls,", his wife of 49 years, Blanche, and his two daughters, Debbie and Bobbie. Born June 30, 1932, in Charleroi, the son of the late George and Susanna Petrosh Palfrey, Mr. Palfrey resided in Charleroi for the majority of his life, retiring after 29 years of service with SuperValu, to Tarpon Springs, Fla., in the fall of 1996. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, Frank was an airman in the U.S. Navy. While in Charleroi, he was active in several organizations including the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 167, the American Legion, and the Charleroi Cooperative Association, where he served as an officer for many years. Additionally, Frank served on the church council of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and was sexton for many years. His "new life" in Florida found him active as well in the Sun Valley Corporation, the Sun Valley Association, the Sun Valley Bowling League and Wednesday Night Bingo, where he was diehard regular. Frank was known to his friends and neighbors these past few years, before illness befell him, as "Super Frank" for all the kind and generous deeds he and his wife regularly and graciously did for the older residents of his senior community. No doctor's appointment was missed for lack of transportation, nor no household repair left undone, if Frank could ever lend assistance. Passionate to the end about the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was equally so about John Wayne, having seen every single movie made by the Duke, innumerable times. Frank's wonderful sense of humor and good-natured persona are already missed by those who knew and loved him. In the current vernacular, Frank was without doubt in many, mnay ways a "real keeper". Survivors include his loving wife, Blanche E. Johnson Palfrey, and daughters Deborah J. Palfrey of Northern California and Roberta L. Palfrey of Alexandria, Va., and nieces and a nephew, Elise, Candy and Georgie Palfrey. In addition to his parents, Mr. Palfrey was predeceased by his three older brothers, George Jr., Edward and Robert. (In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast (Green Team), 300 East Bay Dr., Largo, Fla. 33770-9850. Burial was Wednesday, Dec. 18, in Cycadia Cemetary, Tarpon Springs, Fla. Arrangements were handled by DOBIES FUNERAL HOME, Tarpon Springs, Fla.). |
