I think this site is a terrific idea!! Hope there is much response as it would really be great to know where and how my former classmates are!! Had a great time at CHS and go to most reunions- the 50's one was fantastic- just needed a much bigger place. Left in '59 with $200 in my pocket. Began work as a clerk typist with the Bureau of Ships, U.S. Navy and went to night school for Accounting & Business Law. Became a contract specialist - purchased destroyers; anchors, generators for air craft carriers. Transferred to U.S. Dept. of Transportation where I was the Chief of Procurement for the Secretary of Transportation, retired after 34.5 years. Also went to OCS (left as a 1st LT), traveled to 68 countries. Volunteer at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as a docent, the U.S. Capitol as a Guide, the Newseum as a Guide, and at Miriam's Kitchen to help feed the homeless. Love the performing arts (except jazz). I've been in a stable relationship with my partner Richard for 38 years... in hetero years that would be 76. Love the Redskins, the Nats, and our new ball park. Life has been good for the most part. Reading the other profiles, I'm amazed at the number of cities and towns I've been to where y'all live and I've been there and didn't know. Shucks you could have bought me dinner! Pax vobiscum |

Updated 2/20/08: I left the Valley, in 1959. I served four years in the Air Force and was stationed at Westover AFB, Mass; then went to work for Boeing Aircfaft, as a structural modification mechanic. Later got into the Airlines with Mokawk Airlines, in Utica, N.Y. Returned to Pittsburgh in 1967, with Allegheny Airlines; now it's USAIRWAYS. Retired after 35 years of service, in 2002. Currently, I am enjoying life playing golf in different parts of the country, and spending time with my two daughters and one granddaughter, in Pheonix, AZ. and Martinsburg, WV.

I sing with the Mendelssohn Choir, here in CT. Will travel to China, with the New York City Collegiate Chorale, in June.
Updated 3/24/08: Looking forward to retirement next year and a possible move to Santa Fe, NM. Working as a high school social worker (we were soooo innocent!). Last year traveled to Italy, with the Mendelssohn Chorus. Sang at Sunday High Mass in St. Peter's (even tho I'm not Catholic, I was impressed!!), in Florence and Venice. We'll sing in Prague and Vienna next summer. Where is everybody? I get some updates from my brother, Byron and sister-in-law Joan. |

Carol Ann Lind, Belle Vernon
After a courageous four-year battle with cancer, Carol Ann Lind, 67, of Belle Vernon, died at home on Monday, June 16, 2008. She was born in Stockdale on December 21, 1940, the daughter of the late Harold and Margaret Kovach Hartman. A 1959 graduate of Charleroi High School, she was devoted to her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking and working in her yard. Carol is survived by her husband, Roger; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Kevin Barnhart and their children, Bryce, Jordan and Grant of Beallsville; a son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Shannon Lind and their children, Hayley and Parker of Perryopolis; a daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Sean Herron and their children, Kelsey, Blake and Brady of Belle Vernon. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hartman of Roscoe; a brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Karen Hartman of North Charleroi; a brother, Barry Hartman of Roscoe; five nieces and five nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Hartman. Private services were held at the ED MELENYZER FUNERAL HOMES INC., in Roscoe and burial was in Howe Cemetery, Coal Center. On-line condolences will be accepted at www.melenyzerfuneralhomes.com.

I left Charleroi High in 1958 to marry, Ron Sutherland (CHS ‘56) and later was able to complete my education and even attended some college. I devoted my life to my home and family at first, then as the children entered their teens, worked as a supermarket customer service representative. I then became an accounting clerk at a General Motors automobile dealership. In 1980, I went to work for Penn State University’s, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at Hershey. I retired in 2002, after 22 years of service with them as a medical office associate in the surgical department. With Ron’s job, we have lived in several areas of Pennsylvania which has proved to be very interesting. Ron and I have two grown children, Scott and Linda and four wonderful grandchildren and all are a great pride and joy to us both. In April, 2006 we celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary. I still am working as a project manager, for a flooring company here, in Myrtle Beach. I will retire in two years. I tried it once; it was very boring. My wife and I enjoy the beach, fishing, boating and golf.

So, we have lots of exciting stories around our house now! There are seven grandchildren presently, with another boy due in April. Anthony R. Porreca, 65, of Charleroi, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006. He was born Nov. 9, 1940, in Charleroi, a son of the late Anthony and Rose Croce Porreca. He was a 1959 graduate of Charleroi High School. Mr. Porreca was a member of the Charleroi American Legion, the Italian and Belgium clubs, and he was retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, Allenport Plant. Survivors include two brothers and a sister, Leo Porreca and wife Darlene, Don Porreca and wife Sherryn, all of Beckley, W.Va., and Gena Squarcia and husband Paul, of Plymouth, Mass.; two nephews, Mark Porreca and Paul Squarcia and wife Angela; four nieces, Kimberly Sims, Erin Porreca, Stephanie Anderson and husband Geoffrey, and Suzanne Haynes and husband Nathan; great-nieces and a great-nephew. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother. Friends will be received Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the ED MELENYZER FUNERAL HOMES INC., 825 Charleroi, where funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 20, at 11 a.m. with Fr. William H.
