I'M STILL The Bush Man. I just moved to Toledo a year, ago. I've lived in Houston, Texas and Uniontown, PA- where I was the road manager for a rock band called "The Zippers". That was a hell of a ride! Then off to Claysville, PA to manage two truck stops. Now, I'm in Toledo. Hope to hear from my old High School chums and chumettes. (1/29/05)

GILMER, Vernon IN MEMORIAM- Classmate Tributes
I haven't seen Vernon, since high school, but in my senior year, Vernon was one of my closest friends. Sad to say- although it's true, even though he was one of my closest friends in school, I haven't seen nor talked with him since that time. Hopefully, everything is well with his family or as well as can be expected under the circumstances.

Hey, Classmates of '74...
I am living near Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland, about an hour south of Charleroi. I am married with three children. My husband and I are eagerly awaiting our youngest son's college graduation in the Spring of 2005, after which we can begin our "FUN YEARS".
I have been walking in the woods for a living, selling land. For those of you who remember me, it won't come as much of a surprise I found a career that requires jeans as a uniform!
I haven't made any of the reunions, but that doesn't mean I haven't thought about many of you throughout the years. I would love to get an email from an old friend, if any of you would care to type! I am in Charleroi once a week on family visits and would enjoy "meeting up" & "catching up". So, touch base if you are out there! (7/12/04)

PFROGNER, Ron CLASSMATE TRIBUTES
I was truly saddened to hear of Ron's passing. Just like most of the rest of us, we seemed to have drifted apart over the years because of college, families, work and other assorted reasons. We would occasionally see or speak to each other, sometimes professionally----me answering a minor legal question or handling a matter for his Mom, he re-finishing my wife's piano she inherited from her grandmother. But I could always count on seeing him at our reunions every five years and engaging in conversation about the good old days. At this last one, our 30th, we both fired up a cigar and puffed away just like it was 1974.
I'll remember Ron's wit and keen sense of humor. He, Eddie Hank, Paul Braunegg, Jim Hazy, Pete Jenkins, Mickey Janosko, Kevin Miller, Hammy Guidette and I drank our first beers and shots of K-51 whiskey together, and we puffed on our first cigars at our "spot" and whiled away the hours talking about all the babes in school. We were Dudleys, after all!!
I know he's in a better place, but there will be a big void at the next reunion. Ron truly was a friend. I miss him already.
Blane Black
My deepest sympathy to Ron's family, he'll surely be missed in the community of Charleroi.
My Regards, Vicki Matay Schirra
I was very saddened to learn that Ron had passed away. One of my best memories of last summer’s reunion was seeing and talking to Ron, after a lot of years. Always smiling and joking around, he had not seemed to have changed much in all those years. I always thought Ron was a real and genuinely good person. I’m glad I knew him, and I’ll cherish the memories. Thanks Ron.
-Brad Tedrow
The clock of life is wound but once And no one has the power To tell just when the hands will stop At late or early hour
Ron Pfrogner
Late July 2004. Lower Speers. Eric Huhn, Pam Baker and I finished a posh dinner at the Back Porch, a pre-reunion reunion to do some personal catching up before the big event. The weather felt like no weather at all, effortless, neither cold nor hot with the occasional gentle breeze to remind us we were outside. I suggested a walk along the river to visit the quaint shops at the water’s edge.
We browsed through the stores, examining merchandise, teasing each other about taste. Pam mentioned Ron Pfrogner, how he used to have an antiques and refinishing store in this strip but it was gone now. Hmmm, we said. Wonder how he’s doing, where he went. What a funny guy. So likeable. Did he marry?
We had more questions than answers, curious about Ron and whether he would attend the reunion. We chatted about him as we headed back toward our cars. I happened to look up. There was a sign above us with an arrow: “Pfrogner’s Workshop.” “Ron’s dad?” I asked.
No one knew. Let’s follow the sign, like the Yellow Brick Road. We walked toward a bend, no arrows after that. But before we reached the turn, an energetic figure came striding toward us. Ron. We had – in our ignorance and with the help of serendipity – found the elusive Ron, his vintage Speers home, his workshop, his children running through the yard, and his pretty wife Donna cleaning up the dinner dishes.
Seek and ye shall find.
The essence of Ron was his warmth. Sincere, authentic, Ron didn’t act like he was glad to see you. He was glad to see you. He made us feel at home immediately, as though he’d been expecting us all afternoon. We had a beer. We loitered in his big yard. We made jokes, some silly some witty. Ron’s wit was quick. Age hadn’t slowed it.
His boys rode bikes around the property. Later they ran through the yard, wildly chasing a friend, came up to their dad for introductions and a quick hug and ran off again. His daughter was in the house with mom but eventually she, too, came out to meet the strangers, Dad’s friends from high school.
We stood for an hour at the front of Ron’s home, watching the sun’s rays shimmer on the river, admiring the big zucchinis in his overgrown vegetable garden. We shared the condensed versions of our lives, how we’d gotten to this place at this time. The flow of the river mesmerized us, so soothing as darkness fell. We told stories about swimming in that river as kids, surviving the pollution, dodging barges (they move fast when you’re crossing in front of them). Ducks quacked. Boats drifted by. Ronny, Ryan and Juliann sat on the front porch swing, swaying and giggling.
It was Mayberry.
Ron told us how much he loved his life, his wife, his craft. In some way, we each wanted what he had – peace, love, simplicity. It seemed too good to be true. And . . . it was.
As the sun set, Ron took us into his workshop. I remember piles of furniture, extraordinary pieces, tables, bookcases, armoires, dressers, oak, maple, cherry, ash, all either transformed by Ron or about to be.
Quality mattered to Ron. He took his time. He did it right. If he were going to bring an old piece of furniture back to life, it would be with style and strength. We talked a lot about the wood, the grains, the challenge of restoration. Old pieces had stories to tell. They talked to him, Ron said. And he listened.
Eric noticed that a spindle on the back of one of the restored chairs had been put in upside down. I was afraid Ron would be embarrassed or defensive about the mistake. Not our Ron. He laughed, complimenting Eric on his powers of observation, and said, “I guess I’ll have to fix that before they pick it up.”
Ron was the definition of easy going.
And now he is gone. And it’s not so easy for the rest of us, left behind, wrestling with the unfairness of a life claimed decades too early. Ron with his charm and his wit and gentle nature, should have lived to 100, been rocking on that porch swing with his children and their children and their children.
Instead he flows away from us like the river. We stand helpless at the bank, holding fast to the memories of one magical July evening when he invited us into his life and touched our souls.
Thank you, Ron, wherever you have drifted to. I miss you. Cheryl Deep
I just came on the site to check things out and read about Ron Pfrogner's passing. I am very saddened by this news. I remember talking to Ron, at the reunion last year. I will hold that time in my thoughts forever. Ron, I will miss you.

********************************************** Ron added his profile to the alumni site, in July of 2004. The following was Ron's 'Comment's Box' submission. I especially like the part regarding his "great expectations" about being a husband and father. Such a statement says volumes about "Froggie's" character and the type of man he became in this lifetime. -Debbie Palfrey **********************************************
Well, 30 years ago, if you were to tell me that I would move to Georgia to work with a church, end up working with antiques while there, that I then would move back here to look after my parents, start my own business, not marry until I was 35, only then have 3 kids, and on top of everything- I would be a stripper for 25 years... I would have said "yea right". I mean No Way! Yet, it's true (by the way that's "furniture" I strip). I also found out I really like to read, as long as there's no "Great Expectations"! I even married a librarian. I did have "great expectations" though about being a husband and father, and so far I'm not disappointed. (7/13/04) |
