ALOISI, Henry A. (In Memoriam)
Henry A. Aloisi, 67, of Monessen, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, in Jefferson Regional Medical Center. He was born March 16,1937, a son of the late John and Secondina Daniele Aloisi. He was a lifelong resident of Monessen and a 1955 "top 10" graduate of Monessen High School. While in high school, Mr. Aloisi was selected as a member of various regional and state bands. He attended Saint Vincent College and earned a bachelor of science degree in music education in 1961 and a master's degree in music education from Duquesne University in 1966 Mr. Aloisi's professional teaching career spanned 37 years. He was a music educator and band director at Thomas Jefferson, Mon Valley Catholic, Charleroi Area and Belle Vernon Area high schools. Mr. Aloisi also was the high school chorus director at both Charleroi and Belle Vernon Area school districts, where he co-directed their annual musical productions. He was honored at Heinz Hall by the PMEA (PA Music Educators' Association) for 25-plus years of dedicated service in music education. Mr. Aloisi also was a recipient of a 25-year music education service award from the Westmoreland County Music Educators Association. In addition to his expertise on the clarinet and saxophone, he was a well-known vocalist and entertainer in several Valley dance bands. For many years, Mr. Aloisi directed the MARS Band, which is composed of retired steelworkers and regional musicians who usually performed six summer concerts throughout the Valley. He also was a member of the Italian Band, originally formed to perform authentic Italian folk music during the early days of the annual Monessen Cultural Heritage Festival. Under the sponsorship of the former St Cajetan Roman Catholic Church, the Italian band eventually recorded an album of their most requested Italian songs. Mr. Aloisi was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church (choir member, cantor and wedding vocalist), the Knights of Columbus Council 954, the Musicians Local Union 592, PSEA, PSEA-R, NEA, NEA-R, AARP, the Elks Club, Sons of Italy and the Croatian Club. He also served on the Monessen Planning Commission for many years as its secretary. Mr. Aloisi is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lucille Musial Aloisi of Monessen; a son and daughter-in-law, Dino Anthony and Rita Scorza Aloisi of Center Township; a daughter and son-in-law, Janine Marie Aloisi and Robert Anthony Lombardi of New York City; three grandchildren, Anthony Dino Aloisi, Julia Nicole Aloisi and Ruby Lucia Lombardi; a brother and sister-in-law, Ciro and Mary Aloisi of Mt. Lebanon; a sister, Lidia Aloisi Salvino of Belle Vernon; a sister-in-Iaw, Mary Mastro Aloisi of Monessen; one nephew, numerous nieces and great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Aloisi was preceded in death by two sisters, Dina and Adele Aloisi; a brother, Nick Aloisi; and a brother-in-law, James Salvino. Friends will be received Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at the ROBERT A. BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC., Grand Boulevard and Marion Avenue, Monessen. A blessing service will be held Friday, Dec. 3 at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord R.C. Church with Father David Nazimek as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Hyacinth Cemetery, Monessen.

BASEL, Martha(Kolbe) IN MEMORIAM
Martha passed away, on November 8, 2003, after a lengthy illness. She retired in 1979, after 18 years of service as a cook, for the Charleroi Area School District. Surviving at death were daughters, Linda Posi and Beverly Anders, both of Van Voorhis and grandchildren, Brad and Lisa Posi, along with a brother, Robert Kolbe of New Eagle. |
BATEMAN, Virginia (In Memoriam)
Virginia Bateman, 95, of Charleroi, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, in Havencrest Nursing Center, Carroll Township. She was born Nov. 23, 1911, in Charleroi, a daughter of the late Charles S. and Elsie Powell Bateman. She was a member of Charleroi Presbyterian Church. Miss Bateman was a secretary to the superintendent of the Charleroi School District under Mr. T.L. Pollock and Mr. William Clipman. After resigning from the Charleroi School District, she was associated with her father's agency, the C.S. Bateman Real Estate and Insurance Agency in Charleroi. Surviving are cousins Charles B. Wagner and wife Virginia, who were her caretakers for many years, the Rev. Ralph F. Wagner of Palmer, Alaska, Dorothy Clerihue Braun, of Venice, Fla., and Jane Wagner Shultz, of Beaver. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two cousins, Willis F. Doney and William E. Clerihue. Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the SCHROCK-HOGAN FUNERAL HOME and CREMATION SERVICES INC., (www.schrock-hogan.com), 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, where funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. CALISTRI, Lillian(In Memoriam)
Lillian Calistri was born and raised in Charleroi, the daughter of Peter and Blanche Calistri, of 'Calistri Ice Cream'. Lillian graduated from CHS in 1925 and later, taught home economics at the high school, until her retirement, in the 1950's. Miss Calistri was very popular with her students and encouraged many to continue their educations.

CHECCI, Lewis (In Memoriam)
I noticed that Mr. Lewis Checchi was not mentioned among the teachers. He taught math at CHS, from '59 to '62, before moving onto the Mt. Pleasant school system where he worked until '71. He later relocated to Florida, where he passed away in 1977. He left three children. Such a nice man whose life was too short. I'm sure some of his former students would like this information. (Born 1936, Died 1977)

ERMLICH, Violet V. Moyer (In Memoriam)
Mrs. Ermlich passed away on May 11, 2004, in Monongahela Valley Hospital, at the age of 89. Mrs. Emrlich was a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania, earning bachelor and master degrees in nursing. During World War II, she was employed by the former Charleroi-Monessen Hospital and later, as nurse assistant to Dr. Ralph L. Lutz, of Roscoe. She worked the last 23 years of her career as a school nurse for the Charleroi School District, retiring in June, 1980. Socially active, she was a member of PSEA and NEA. Survivors included her husband of 64 years, John E. Ermlich; one son, John E.; two grandchildren; three sisters and one brother. |
ERMLICK, William F. "Bugs" Jr. IN MEMORIAM
William F. "Bugs" Ermlick Jr., 82, of Roscoe, died Friday, March 14, 2008, at his home. He was born January 22, 1926, in Stockdale, a son of the late William and Mary King Ermlick. A World War II veteran, William was an aerial photographer and gunner with the 393rd Bomb Squadron - U.S. Army Air Force. Prior to entering the Air Force, he worked at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, Allenport plant. Mr. Ermlick was a respected educator for over 30 years. He was an alumnus of California University, West Virginia University, the University of Pittsburgh and Penn State University. He began his teaching career as a social studies teacher at Monongahela High School, where he later became one of the first home and school visitors' of the county. He subsequently became assistant principal at Monongahela High School. Mr. Ermlick then progressed to the position of principal at Carroll Junior High and Carroll Elementary schools. He continued his professional career as principal at Charleroi Junior-Senior High School. Mr. Ermlick was elected principal of McKeesport High School and retired as the assistant superintendent of the McKeesport School District. During his lifetime, Mr. Ermlick was very involved in community service. He was one of the first Little League baseball coaches in the area, maintained a lifetime membership with the Roscoe Volunteer Fire Company, was active with Five Town and CAZ Ambulance Services, was a former tax collector in Roscoe, and he was a member of the California Area School Board, St. Joseph Pillar Society, American Legion Post 801, the Brownsville Masonic Lodge and was most recently an active member of the Roscoe Borough Council. A devout Catholic, he was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Roscoe. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Anne Cairns Ermlick; his son, Scott Frederick (Marcella) Ermlick, grandchildren, Adrienne and Jonathan, and great-granddaughter, Aliyah; daughter, Susan Metz Ermlick, and grandsons, Nicholas and Alexander Metz; one sister, Betty Ermlick; a brother-in-law, Glenn (Patricia) Cairns, two sisters-in-law, Andrea (Benjamin) Skrobacs and Thelma Ermlick; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother and sister, Donald and Mildred; and one niece and nephew, Diane and Brent Ermlick. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the ED MELENYZER FUNERAL HOMES INC., Roscoe. A Memorial Service will be conducted by the Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department on Monday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. A Blessing Service will be held at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be private.

HARRIS, James J. (In Memoriam)
James J. Harris , a long-time educator in the mid-Monongahela Valley, died Saturday, February 14, 2004, at his home in Pensacola, Florida. Mr. Harris was a graduate of Centerville High School, where he excelled in football and basketball. He graduated from California State Teachers College and was awarded a master's degree from Duquesne University. Mr. Harris began his career in eduaction as a teacher at Centerville High School, where he also coached football and basketball, before becoming principal. He then went on to become principal of Mapletown High School, and later was named principal of Charleroi Area High School in 1964. He was subsequently appointed Assistant Superintendent of Washington County Schools, before retiring from Intermediate Unit One in 1976. Mr. Harris was a lifetime member of the American Legion and also, belonged to numerous professional organizations. He served with the U.S. Army in France, during World War II. Mr. Harris was survived by two sisters, three sons, one daughter, seven grandchildren and a long-time companion. |
HERSHISER, William E. (In Memoriam)
William E. Hershiser, 71, of Fallowfield Township, died Tuesday, May 3, 2005 in his home. He was born March 23, 1934 in Johnstown, the son of the late Frank and Nellie Hershiser Campbell. He lived for many years in Monongahela and Charleroi. Mr. Hershiser was a member of Mary, Mother of the Church Parish of Charleroi, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, and a graduate of Monongahela High School, California University of Pennsylvania and West Virginia University. Mr. Hershiser retired after 36 years as a teacher, guidance counselor and administrator at Charleroi Area High School. Surviving are his wife, Claudia Kostura Hershiser; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Matthew Fleming of Fallowfield Township; his special love, his grandson, Cameron Fleming; one brother, Ken Campbell of Florida; and two sisters, Judy Struniak of Washington, D.C., and Susan Weinkoff of Philadelphia; his very special aunt, Freida Clemenson of Johnstown. At Bill's request, there will be no visitation and private interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the CARL J. SPALLINO FUNERAL HOME, Charleroi.

JEFFREY, Betty IN MEMORIAM
Betty B. Jeffrey, 88, of Coral Springs, Fla., a former and long-time resident of Charleroi, died peacefully on Monday, March 6, 2006. She was born in Speers on July 30, 1917, a daughter of the late Isaac Newton Beazell and Vivian Donaldson Beazell Patton. Mrs. Jeffrey graduated from California Normal School, now California University of Pennsylvania, with a bachelor's degree in education and received her master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She started her teaching career in the Hickory School District and also was a teacher in the Charleroi Area School District for many years. While living in Charleroi, she was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Charleroi and the Athene Club. Mrs. Jeffrey interrupted her teaching career to proudly serve her country as a member of the Women's Army Corps during World War II. She was stationed for much of this time in the European Theater of Operations, primarily in Belgium and France. Mrs. Jeffrey is survived by her daughter, Paige Patla, of Coral Springs, Fla.; her son, John Mark Jeffrey and wife Alexis, of Martinsville; N.J.; three grandchildren, Erin, James and Jessica Patla; a sister, Norma Houseman, of Hanover,; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the SCHROCK-HOGAN FUNERAL HOME INC. (www.schrock-hogan.com), 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi. Francis "Sandy" Santini, 62, of North Charleroi, passed away at home on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, his birthday. He was the youngest son of the late Edmund and Beatrice Wilkinson Santini and the husband of Joan Lowther Santini for 40 years. Sandy graduated with the Class of 1962 from Charleroi Area High School, where he was employed for 35 l/2 years and retired as the maintenance supervisor in August 2005. He served as the Charleroi girls' middle school softball coach for 20 years and coached the North Charleroi Recreation girls' softball for many years. Sandy also played for the North Charleroi French Club Softball Team. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying the outdoors, hunting, fishing, golfing and organizing family paintball games with his grandchildren and sons-in-law. Sandy attended the First Christian Church of Charleroi, and was a member of the F&AM Lodge of Fayette City, the Slavic and French clubs, both of North Charleroi, the Cokeburg Sportsmen's Club, and the Confederate Sons of America. He served as a councilman for the Borough of North Charleroi for 25 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Tracie Hyatt and husband Shayne, of North Charleroi, and Shannon Hostovich and husband Ron, of Fallowfield Township; his son, Wayne Francis Santini Jr. and wife Amy, of North Charleroi; two brothers, Eugene Santini and wife Bertha, of Belle Vernon (Lynnwood), and Leonard Santini and wife Sally, of Fallowfield Township; one sister, Viola Elton, of Iowa; six grandchildren, Dane and Zachary Hostovich, Jerimiah and Hunter Hyatt, and Dominik and Rylee Santini; six nephews and three nieces. SAURITCH, Lois G. (Green) IN MEMORIAM
Lois G. Sauritch, 78, of Charleroi, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, in her home. She was born Dec. 7, 1928, in Charleroi, a daughter of the late Gilbert P. and Daisy Warnick Green. She was a member of Mary, Mother of the Church Parish of Charleroi and a volunteer at the church family center after funerals. Lois also was a volunteer at the Charleroi Food Bank. She was retired as a baker in the cafeteria at Charleroi Area High School. Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Mark and Patti Sauritch, of Ivyland, Tim Sauritch, of Fairless Hills, and Kurt and Lisa Sauritch, of Monessen; two daughters, Carla, of Granada Hills, Calif., and Susan, of Charleroi, with whom she made her home; two brothers, Jack Green, of Char1eroi, and Frank Green, of Speers; one sister, Mary Kifer, of Perryopolis; and two grandchildren, Drew and Nicole. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Karl "Kutcy" Sauritch, in 2000; one brother, Robert Green; and three sisters, Wilma Poteray, Helen Beck and Carol Kanes. Friends will be received in the CARL J. SHELAPINSKY, John L. IN MEMORIAM
John Shelapinsky, 91, of Fallowfield Township, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born Sept. 28, 1916, in Charleroi, a son of the late Philip and Anastasia Ilchyshyn Shelapinsky. He was a member of Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church, Elks Lodge No. 494, American Legion Post No. 22, 10th Street Athletic Club and the Boosters Club, all in Charleroi, the Pennsylvania and Washington County Retired Teachers Association and the Alumni Association. Mr. Shelapinsky was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a retired teacher from the Charleroi Area School District. He was inducted in the Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Surviving is one sister, Mary Kubic, of Charleroi; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Shelapinsky; one sister, Ann Metro; and two brothers, William and Nick Shelapinsky. Friends will be received at the CARL J. SPALLINO FUNERAL HOME, 819 Fal1owfield Ave., Charleroi, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home on Friday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. SOROKA, Very Reverend Vladimir IN MEMORIAM
The Very Rev. Vladimir Soroka, 83, pastor emeritus of Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church in McKees Rocks, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, after a lengthy illness. A graduate of Duquesne University and an alumnus of the DU Tamburitzans, he also served as a paratrooper during World War II in France. After graduation from St. Vladimir's Seminary in Crestwood, N.Y., he was ordained to the priesthood in 1960, where he served parishes in Charleroi, Ambridge and McKees Rocks. He retired in 2000. He was well known as an authority in Orthodox liturgical music and for translating and publishing Russian hymns in English. He is survived by his wife, Olga; one daughter, Donya Yewisiak of Moon Township; three sons, Michael Soroka of McKees Rocks, Leonard Soroka of Minneapolis, Minn., and the Rev. Thomas Soroka of Moon Township; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Zena Pecuch of Arizona and Sylvia Elnitsky of Vestal, N.Y.; and a brother, the Very Rev. Igor Soroka of Donora, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, the Very Rev. Leonid Soroka and Sergei Soroka; and a sister, Alexandra Bazil. Visitation will be held in St. Saint Nicholas Church, McKees Rocks, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 5 and 6. A Memorial service will be celebrated by His Eminence, Archbishop Kyrill, bishop of Pittsburgh, on Friday evening at 7 p.m. Archbishop Kyrill will preside at funeral services on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. and Divine Liturgy on Monday, Aug. 8, at 10 a.m. Interment will take place Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Saint Tikhon's Monastery, South Canaan, at 10 a.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to the VALERIAN F. Anna Vesely Cheti, 90, died in Mon Valley Care Center, on August 6, 2003. Mrs. Cheti was a member of WWII, having served in the Air Force. A graduate of Seton Hill College, she was a retired school teacher, from Charleroi Area and Belle Vernon high schools. Survivors included step-daughters, Eileen Carson and Cynthia Kinder, along with 4 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. |
