FALLOWFIELD TOWNSHIP - The students called him Bernie because they had trouble pronouncing his German name. For a year, Brend Uhlemann called the Charleroi area home. And they made him feel at home, he said. Uhlemann recalled that one cheerleader placed a large German flag in the high school window. "Everybody was so nice to me," Uhlemann said. "I was exceptionally well received. It was an extremely good experience." Though 20 years have passed since Uhlemann came here as a foreign exchange student sponsored by the Charleroi Rotary, the warm memories remain. Uhlemann returned for his Charleroi Area High School 20th class reunion last weekend. He renewed old acquaintances. He was especially close to Ruth Corrin, a high school health and physical education teacher for 25 years before retiring from the Charleroi Area School District in 1993. Noting her grandparents emigrated to the United States from Germany, Corrin said she and Uhlemann developed a friendship. Uhlemann spent a lot of time with Corrin's family during his stay, which covered the 1984-85 school year. The Corrins took Uhlemann to Gettysburg and Fort Necessity. He went on a trip with the Ski Club, which she sponsored. Ed and Linda Sichi, of Monongahela, and Dennis and Theresa Paluso, of Fallowfield Township, hosted Uhlemann during his stay in the U.S. He attended a get together with the Palusos last Sunday. After graduating from Charleroi Area High School in 1985, he returned home and finished his schooling there. Uhlemann completed his military service obligation and then attended a technical university in Aachen, Germany. A chemical engineer, he works for the Swiss pharmaceutical company, Roche. In 1994, he married Corina. The couple have a son, 5, and daughter, 3, whom his parents watched so the couple could make the 25-hour trip here. One of Uhlemann's classmates arranged for an airline ticket so the Uhlemanns could come for the reunion. "We're already making plans to come back in a couple of years," Uhlemann said. "I'd like my children to see this area." About 40 members of the class of 1985 attended the reunion at the Four Points Sheraton Inn in Greensburg. "Needless to say, they did not have to debate who came the furthest," Corrin said.
