![]() Polish Easter traditions lovingly painted over time... By Dorothy Yagodich, TRIBUNE-REVIEW, March 27, 2005 Charleroi family still maintains ties with relatives in homeland. Eleanor Pyzynski Sable religiously maintains her family's Polish traditions for Easter. Edward and Kazmira Pyzynski resided on McKean Avenue in Charleroi with their family of two boys, Robert and Henry and three girls, Jennie, Helen and Eleanor. Sable said her dad, a talented artist employed by Corning Glass Works in Charleroi, always decorated Easter eggs with colorful flowers, ducks and rabbits. Although Sable has many examples of her dad's artwork throughout her home, none are Easter eggs. "We had to break them to eat them," she said. "I guess we were pretty lucky. How many people have the talent to paint like my dad did?" Throughout the 40 days of Lent, the Pyzynski family observed fasting as required by the Catholic Church. No weddings, movies or dancing were permitted, said Sable. Good Friday was a special time of fasting, silence and prayer. On Holy Saturday, the house filled with the aroma of ham, kielbasi and fresh-baked Easter breads. These, along with salt, horseradish and the decorated Easter eggs, were carefully packed into a basket, covered with a white linen cloth and carried to church to be blessed by the priest. On Easter Sunday, the basket was uncovered and "we ate from the blessed basket," Sable said. This is a tradition also observed by Pyzynski cousins in Poland. Sable still writes to her cousins in Magliwice, Polska (Poland). Gifts sent from the homeland throughout the years include Easter eggs. "Aren't they beautiful?" Sable asked as she pointed to the delicate design covering each egg. "These eggs are made of wood. They won't break." The cousins sent the decorated Easter eggs, a Polish cookbook published in Warsaw, and about five Polish dolls in native dress. One doll is nearly a foot tall and four smaller dolls decorate a stand in Sable's sewing and crafts room. Sable was named Charleroi Citizen of the Year 2002 by the Charleroi American Legion. These days, Sable resides in Charleroi with husband, William, an electrical inspector for Middle Atlantic Inspection Inc. They still observe the Lenten fast and Holy Days as in the Polish/Slovak tradition. The couple has one daughter, Sharon Sable Hess, married to William Hess, an administrator with the Monessen Ambulance Service. Sable's grandson is Ryan Hess. Sharon Hess recalled the Easter traditions when she was a youngster. "On Good Friday, we colored Easter eggs." There was no radio or television allowed between noon and 3 p.m.. We would always go to church. The Easter basket was packed with ham, kielbasi, the colored Easter eggs, horseradish and bread, then taken to the priest on Holy Saturday to be blessed." Hess also recalled her own Easter basket that the Easter bunny filled with sweet treats. The Hess family joins the Sables today to observe Easter Sunday with the traditional foods shared from the family Easter basket. Sable's sister, Helen Luckasevic of Charleroi, also recalled the handpainted Easter eggs her father decorated. "He was a talented artist. Not only did he paint flowers, bunnies and ducks on the eggs," said Luckasevic, "he painted each of our names on one of the eggs. We always looked for the egg with our name on it. That was a special treat."
