When the Charleroi High School Alumni Web site opened October 18, 2002, just 10 former students had submitted profiles to Jeane Palfrey. A year later, Palfrey's site had received 1,500 submissions. The site, CharleroiPaHsAlumni.org, which catalogs the members of every graduating class, has grown considerably. Palfrey, 1974 CAHS graduate who now lives in northern California, said she feels word of the Web site has spread far and wide. However, she said the effort might be missing its mark at home. "I have submissions from Honduras and Australia, but I think there are people living on Fourth Street in Charleroi who don't know about the site," Palfrey said. Palfrey, who former classmates might better know as Debbie, decided to establish the site after finding dissatisfaction with other Web sites. While Palfrey said that she is not computer savvy, she found a company that made starting her own site easy. In her free time, Palfrey does all the work required to maintain the site. She also shoulders the $100 dollar per month bill to keep it up and running. "I consider this a community service," Palfrey said of the work she puts into the site. Palfrey said that she looks forward to every submission, adding that it is a treat when one pops up in her email inbox. That is especially true when a submission comes from someone she knows. Palfrey encourages her classmates to submit pictures to the site. "They can either scan the pictures, or mail them to me with a self-addressed, stamped envelope and I'll scan them and send them back," Palfrey said. While the work has been daunting at times, Palfrey said that it is rewarding. She says the site has created a new interest in Charleroi and its heritage. Palfrey is looking into the possibility of conducting a study about the site and the way it connects former students. Palfrey said such connections seem to be similar to the novel game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon." According to the game, Kevin Bacon can be connected to every other Hollywood actor through six historical relationships. She claims that when it comes to Charleroi, such connections can be realized through two relationships. Palfrey wants to see more submissions each day in her inbox. "I still have 20,000 people to find," Palfrey said. For more information, or to contact Palfrey, access the Internet at www.CharleroiPaHsAlumni.org.
