Valley export: Fallowfield native helping children... By Stacy Wolford, THE VALLEY INDEPENDENT, October 25, 2003

Long before he became a prestigious psychologist, Dr. James Moon was just another teenager trying to make a few bucks working at Porter's Jewelry Store in Charleroi and at local gas stations.

It was his blue-collar upbringing in the Mon Valley that he now credits for the work ethic and dedication he now has in his profession.

The son of James F. and Irene Moon, he grew up in Fallowfield Township. His parents still live in the same house.

He is a 1973 Charleroi School District graduate.

Moon, 47, said he has never forgotten the teachers who made a significant impression on him as a teenager, including math teacher Richard Filchock, who helped him think "out of the box."

When he was a sophomore, he was accepted to a program at California State Teachers College, where instructor George Novak sparked in him the desire to go to college. Moon went on to graduate from Washington & Jefferson College in 1977, and received his doctorate in clinical psychology at age 25 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1982. He holds a master of business degree.

Moon's impressive resume and career as a psychologist has taken him from private practice to hospitals, counseling centers and universities.

He most recently served as senior psychologist at the Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute and as director of clinical operations at Winter Haven Hospital, Winter Haven, Fla. In 2002, he was named president of The Vanguard School in Lake Wales, Fla., a private, nonprofit boarding school for 150 learning disabled students in grades 6 through 12.

Last year, he was named president of the Vanguard School Foundation, managing the school's more than $3 million endowment funds.

But no matter what path life has taken him, Moon says there's no place like the Mon Valley.

"The Mon Valley is a place where there are strong family values," Moon said.

Moon is especially enjoying his role at The Vanguard School as he is now back in the education field, and helping children and families.

"This is my niche," he said.
