 Old North Charleroi Slovak Club My maternal great-grandfather, Aime Emplit, was a coal miner born in Belgium in 1864, was married in 1884 and immigrated to the United States in 1886. He worked in the coal mines from early childhood in Belgium and later in the U.S. until he was seriously injured in a mine accident. After his injury, he did not return to the mines and became a carpenter. He built and owned a number of buildings and houses in and around Lock Four. One of them was the former Slovak Club which was located at the corner of Orange Street and Center Avenue. He lived in the back of the club building until his death in 1948 at age 84. My parents rented the upstair apartment where I was born and lived until age four. In 1941 my dad and great-grandfather built our home in Fallowfield Township along Curtin School Road, later named Walnut Ridge Road. The above photo is of the former Slovak Club building as it appeared in the early 1950's. In was later razed to make way for the Lock Four Volunteer Fire Company.
