As a young girl, I remember hearing about our neighbor, Gus Brickner, Jr.'s swimming exploits in the Mon River, in the dead of winter. Apparently, he was a member of the famed "polar bear" club, long before such a thing became a part of pop culture. Jeane Palfrey, '74 From my memory, I think he also made two unsuccessful attempts on the English Channel. If I'm not mistaken, his time while in the water was the fastest of all who ever swam it. Some said the reason he did not succeed at completion was because he was too old before he attempted the swim and his stamina gave out.
