Graduates of Charleroi Area High School now have the opportunity to keep in touch with classmates through a new Web site created by 1974 graduate Jeane Palfrey. By logging onto www.charleroipahsalumni.org classmates can click "contact us" and complete the attached e-mail form. At the site, classmates will find a class directory, links, corrections, changes, updates, reunions, teachers/staff, as well as memorial entries for those Charleroi "graduates no longer with us." Palfrey explained the Web site project grew out of disgust. She felt the concept of an inter-connected database for the school, "an absolutely wonderful idea." When she paid the fee to another site, Palfrey found nothing in the form of communication with other classmates. There were no e-mail addresses, residential/mailing addresses, phone numbers or identifying information. There was no way to be active with the site. "That made me angry," she related. Palfrey was determined to create her own site with the desired attributes. Initially, she was going to do the site for the Class of 1974, "then I thought, why not do it for the whole school." She contacted a software company, SightRiteNow.com, paid for the domain name, banner ads, and continues to pay the monthly fee out of her own pocket. "I kind of consider it my community service," she said. "It's fascinating." She devotes about two hours a day to the Web site. There are more than 300 classmates posted at present with more coming in each day, from as early as 1934 up to 2002 graduates. Palfrey estimates a potential of 15,000 graduates eligible for the site. Palfrey said entries are from all over the country, actually all over the world. The latest one is from Hawaii. Some classmates work with satellites and national defense, there are doctors, dentists, teachers, Senate staffers, post office workers, homemakers, and retirees just enjoying the good life. This site is becoming "larger than life and growing exponentially." Palfrey registers more than 70 hits a day at the site and that is "snowballing as well." People are so hungry to touch the memories, she said. "They cannot wait to hear where their school chums are, what they are doing, and what is happening back home. It's getting bigger than I ever thought it would. This is a chronicle of the history of the town. This is a biography of the town of Charleroi." Else"Schultzie"(Brosen) Metcalfe, class of 1952, of Smyrna, Ga, expressed excitement about the new Web site. "I am interested in hearing from classmates," she said. Nancy(Paxton) Losey, class of 1952, of Jonesborough, Tenn., said, "I was so happy to hear about the site." Betty Jean(Schwartz) Hawk, class of 1941, of Jefferson Hills, writes that she is hoping to hear from any of her classmates. A response came from James Bricker, of Cuyahoga, Ohio, who said he should have graduated with the class of 1951, but his parents moved to Belle Vernon when he was in the ninth grade. Although he was president of his graduating class at Marion High School, he attends the class of 1951 reunions. "Please always consider me one of you. I hold a special place in my heart for old friends at Charleroi." Palfrey, who many may remember as Deborah or Debbie from the Class of '74, has resided in Benicia, Calif., for the past 20 years. She is self-employed in furniture/interior design and will complete an MBA in international business next year. Since she felt Deb or Debbie did not fit well with her work, she took her second name for the business, hence Jeane Palfrey. She is the daughter of the late Frank(Moon) Palfrey, who passed away in December 2002, and Blanche Johnson Palfrey, Class of 1950. The Palfreys retired to Florida in 1996. The family had resided at 828 Shady Ave. in Charleroi for almost 30 years. As for the Web site manager, Palfrey enjoys travel with an international scope, or just cocooning at home. Palfrey asks anyone in Charleroi with relatives in other areas to relay the information, "to get the word out." She adds that a friend/relative can submit a name or names with contact information, with the individual's permission, on behalf of any alumnus who may not have an e-mail address or access to the Internet. Questions and inquiries about the site may be addressed to jeanepalfrey@sprynet.com. Palfrey says she receives many inquiries asking why other Valley towns do not have a Web site for their school, like the one she started. Begun in October 2002, Palfrey admits the Web site is likely to become overwhelming as more classmates register. "I'm going to have to figure out what to do, how to handle this. But, I'll deal with it." She added, "The pleasure I'm getting out of this is just great. I'm having such a good time."
