Sabo's volunteerism recognized... By Chris Buckley, Valley Independent, December 11, 2006

Charleroi's Stefan Sabo has spent much of his youth volunteering his time to help others, most recently as a member of the Leo Club.
But Sabo recently joined an elite club when he was named "International Leo of the Year."

It was a lengthy process that began in the spring at the local level, when he was chosen by District 14M, the Lions Club that serves Charleroi and the surrounding area.

He then was cited at the state level before being chosen last month for the international award. Sabo was given a plaque and medal at the Pennsylvania fall council meeting in York, Pa.

The process began with an extensive application in which Sabo had to detail his community service, past awards and extracurricular activities.

He also wrote essays on subjects ranging from his views on community service to Lions Club values.

Sabo, son of Paul and Patricia Sabo, was among 140,000 Leos worldwide to apply for the award.

Sabo was valedictorian of the 2006 graduating class at Charleroi Area High School.

He's currently a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania, where he's majoring in mathematics and physics and minoring in music.

Prior to leaving for Penn, Sabo attended the Keystone Boy's state program at Shippensburg University, discussed the Boy's State program at the American Legion state convention in Pittsburgh and placed third in the District 14M Young Leaders in Service Award program.

Sabo also received a volunteer research internship in robotics and computer programming at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. During the six-week program, Sabo wrote codes for computer chips used in robots.

Sabo hopes to become a college professor and lead a research team. That's why he believes his experience at CMU was invaluable.

While with the Leo Club, Sabo did a lot of interaction with others.

"I like taking leadership roles in projects," Sabo said.

Looking back on his many service projects, Sabo said he was affected by the lives he touched. He fondly recalled singing Christmas carols and playing the accordion for senior citizens at area personal care homes and serving food at Mom's Place.

Although he is studying in Philadelphia, Sabo still volunteers. He is currently a tutor for the West Philadelphia Tutor Project.
