![]() Old Charleroi The photograph is of a Victorian house on Washington Avenue, in Charleroi. The house still stands today, but looks quite different. Notice the beautiful woodwork on the house. Its all gone, now and replaced with aluminum siding(the unfortunate trend, after WWII). Notice the dirt street, the wooden sidewalk, the manner of dress and of course, the boy on the horse. I and others agree, that this picture is definitely circa 'turn of the Century'. I think it's a great example of Old Charleroi. Kim Wiehl, '85 ![]() ![]() Lower Lock Four This is Lower North Charleroi or Lower Lock Four to us natives. I don't have an exact date, but I believe it to be post WWI, but prior to the start of WWII. My uncle dated the photo around then, from his knowledge of trains and the style of the boxcars. He said the style pictured was on the lines after WWI, but gone by WWII. The type of boxcar pictured would have been obsolete, by 1941 and only a few such boxcars of this type would have remained. I don't how accurate this is, but he does seem to his 'stuff'. You can see the old Corning Works, in the upper left, here and the building in the upper right is the old coal tipple, at 13th Street. This a long way from Charleroi. You never know where this stuff might turn up. It's a warm feeling though, to find a treasure like this far from where home. There is no indication about the vintage of the photo, but the streets are paved. Interestingly, the man on the corner of McKean looks like he is wearing a policeman's hat. The old church was constructed in 1907 & was named St. John The Baptist Russian Orthodox Church. The old church burned on December 31, 1923, from bad wiring. In June of 1924, the foundation for the new church was begun. It was renamed Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church in 1935 & then renamed again in 1992, to Holy Trinity Orthodox Church. The new church is still there and has an active congregation. They celebrated their 100 year anniversary in 2001. Submitted by, Kim Wiehl, '85. ![]() ![]() Carnegie Coal Co. This old picture is a scene looking south at Thirteenth Street with McKean Avenue to the left and Lincoln Avenue to the right. The red brick buildings at right were the Westside Car Barns where street cars were housed and repaired. The Pittsburgh Railway car barn was about a block and a half south on McKean. It is the building with the arched roof visible just beyond the Carnegie Coal Company tipple bridge. The trolley lines ceased operations in Charleroi on June 28, 1953. Later in 1953, both car barns were purchased by Joseph Lettrich & Sons, general contractors. The arched roofed building was remodeled into Charleroi's first supermarket, Thorofare Market (1954-55). In 1985, Thorofare succeeded to IGA's Super Dollar Market. A major portion of the remodeled West Side barns were used for the Pennsylvania Department of Employment Services and Lettrich Company offices were housed in the rest.
