Since its inception in October of 2002, this website has seen a variety of amazing developments. Connections to people and a life long lost to many have taken place. This of course, should be expected when a vehicle like the alumni site is allowed to foster in a creative and unimpeded environment. With such evolution, comes not only the anticipated event, but the unforeseen one as well. As relationships are rekindled, it is only natural that information is exchanged between and among individuals and subjects no longer regularly pondered, emerge as topics of current concern. Such has occurred over the course of this summer regarding the brutal attack and murder of high school sophomore Mary Irene Gency, in February of 1977.

Correspondingly, the execution-style, lover’s lane murder of Jimmy Ramsey, 18 and attempted murder of companion Mary Ann Lundy, 16, in November, 1971 has surfaced likewise in the discourse of the past few months. To date, both incidents remain unsolved.

Incredibly though, a third analogous yet unreported event has come to light as a direct consequence of another victim’s interaction with former classmates found though the site; an incident, strikingly eerie in similarity to the aforementioned. Unlike Mary Irene and Jimmy, this particular victim did survive his/her attack, albeit in total silence and at times, in great despair for 30 plus years and today, leads a successful, happy and fulfilling life.

The facts and circumstances which surround this never before reported crime have been handed over to the authorities. It is also the perception at this moment, due to the “cold case” nature of all three episodes, it is highly possible this staggering latest information may be pushed aside by investigators, despite this third individual’s claim as to knowledge of his/her attacker’s identity/name. As unbelievable as this may appear, it is more than probable this most recent lead will never be pursued to its utmost.

Even when the most stalwart and honorable officials are in charge of an investigation, as was likely the situation in the early to mid- 1970’s in Charleroi and the Mon Valley, wrong conclusions can be drawn from the evidence at hand, mostly from a lack of sophistication of the time. This remains true even in the present climate of enlightened psychological and scientific law enforcement techniques/procedures. Mistakes can be made and the wrong person(s) charged and arrested, all the while allowing the real perpetrator to evade justice and continue his criminal behavior. Years ago, this was exponentially so due to a less developed understanding of human behavior and of course, the more rudimentary science of the day. Tragically, far too many times back then the police simply “went after and/or arrested the wrong guy”. And this truly may be the case regarding the nightmarish events involving Mary Irene, Jimmy, Mary Ann and this third unidentified victim.

It is probable the instant cases are not the only ones to have happened in and around Charleroi and the adjacent areas, during the 1970’s. Common sense would dictate this to be the case, especially in light of recent developments regarding this third victim. Truly the question should be asked… how many incidents did go unreported because of a young boy’s/girl’s adolescent shame and 70’s- era fear of societal reprisal? It is equally likely that one individual is responsible for these gruesome acts… reported or unreported. The infusion of logic and frighteningly similar MO’s strongly leads in this direction. One must consider, just exactly how many maniacs and serial rapists/killers there could have been running amok in the 70’s, in what was in all reality a quiet, safe, everyone knew everyone, off-the-beaten-path kind of place(?).

With the advent of pc technology, the Internet and subsequently, the alumni site- communication heretofore unimaginable has been made available to all. With these amazing tools literally at one’s fingertips, it would seem highly possible the reign of terror visited upon Charleroi and its residents 30 years ago, now can be solved via en masse or perhaps, individual interaction. Additionally, there are those persons who to this day have information regarding one, two and/or all three of the mentioned incidents. These individuals need to come forward and state what they know. And do so immediately. It is hoped CharleroiPaHsAlumni.org, with its many participants and readers can help to facilitate the resolution and closure of these grisly events and in time, bring peace to those still living victims and loved ones.
